Mencius Society is an open-membership organization and a tax-exempt public entity qualified to accept donations under the governance of the New York State Bureau of Charities Organization. EIN 56-234-3092; Tax Exempt Certificate # EX 248091. All US residents are eligible to join Mencius Society as a “General Member”. Mencius Society (and its aliases “EastRiver Ensemble” and “EastRiver Arts Center”) is historically associated with the Wossing Center, re-incorporated as ACE Forum, Inc. (a private small-business corporation whose executive director is Julie Tay, founder and current Vice-President of Mencius Society; MSA is co-founded by Xiannian Xiao (treasurer) who is also employed (since 2001) as instructor at the Wossing Center. MSA subleases space with Ace Forum, Inc. and receives further benefits in terms of free access to general office amenities, adminstrative support volunteers, and the use of the telephone and other modes of communication. From time to time, Mencius Society will compensate individuals for work done at events or performances who may also be or have been staff or freelance contractors hired by Ace Forum. It is assumed that all freelance workers are “Independent Subcontractors” responsible for their own tax filing and liability and other insurances
